Get a taste of North Holland’s history in Medemblik

Medemblik is about a 30-minute drive from Oudkarspel. Medemblik is known for its beautifully beautiful historical museums, like the Dutch Steam Engine Museum. It is the oldest city in West Friesland, located on the shores of the IJsselmeer. You will feel the history of this beautiful city as soon as you visit the imposing Radboud Castle.

The Radboud Brewery
You can taste the culture! Since the 13th century, different types of beer have been brewed in Medemblik, such as blond, double, triple and pale ale. At the brewery you can taste beer or see how their beers are made. In addition, Radboud also offers cooking workshops, where you learn to cook with – you guessed it: beer!

Radboud Castle
A journey back in time! Radboud Castle was built in 1288 and is located on the east side of the harbor in Medemblik. The impressive castle was built by Floris V and his wife Beatrice. There is a fun treasure hunt for children and an extensive audio tour for adults

At the ‘Groot Hemelrijck’ there is a real Pirate exhibition where you can gain insight into the lives of the men on board of a pirate ship.

The Dutch Steam Engine Museum
In Medemblik you will find another special outing: The Dutch Steam Engine Museum. Discover a world of shiny copper, chrome, iron and fast moving pistons. A visit to the museum transports you to a time when steam and steam engines were the driving force of the industry. The Vier Noorder Koggen steam pumping station was built in 1869 and is named after the craft area and water board

On the Super Stoom Dagen, the steam pumping station will be put into operation as it once used to be. The steam engine sets the pump in motion and water from the West Frisian polders is drained into the IJsselmeer via the gully.

You can also visit the Steam Engine Museum by hopping on Medemblikker City Tour. During the ride, your guides will tell interesting tales about the beautiful city of Medemblik and surroundings.

Eatery ‘de Kwikkel’
After a busy day of touring the city, you can safely land at Eetcafé de Kwikkel for a good evening meal. Lunch, or just a cup of coffee and cake is also possible. At De Kwikkel you have a good meal any time of the day. For children there is a special children’s menu card full of coloring pages and riddles.
